Obamacare for Veterans and Living in Beer Cans

It pays to study history, and this current administration would do well to try it sometime. Unfortunately for the United States, I don’t believe they will.

A small item came up this morning. Apparently, the Obama administration would rather not have any special means of paying for our veterans’ health care. After all, it is just so darn expensive to pay for all those wounded soldiers…

There is an old poster that was circulated by young Republican types a while back. It is simply a picture of a supermarket shelf in the Soviet Union somewhere. Just the picture says it all. One, single, lonely loaf of something bad looking amid an endless expanse of fluorescent light and refrigeration. A woman is reaching for that last loaf, about to deny the store even a single offering for it’s customers.

That is Obama health care, and the Veterans of the USA are merely the latest, small-potatoes, “unimportant” group to get in the way.

You see; when you decide that the government is in the business of providing everybody with something, you immediately have a massive budget problem. You simply have to find savings somewhere. Let’s say you are giving everybody “free” housing, you cannot offer everyone a nice, cushy penthouse apartment. The government cant beg, borrow, or steal that kind of money. Even printing it wont work, because the more you print, the less a dollar is worth, so there is a point at which you are not getting anything more for every new dollar you roll off the presses.

No, you are going to make a quonset hut sort of thing out of fiberglass, anchor it to the ground with four cheap concrete footings, put in a pre-fabricated plastic floor, and bingo, you have just taxed your entire citizenry more than half of their paychecks so you could cover vast swaths of countryside with junk; literally beer cans for people to “live” in; if you can call that living.

The more you universalize a “service” for the entire citizenry, the lower the common denominator gets. This is why you have to schedule use of a maternity ward in Canada optimally 10 months in advance. Now, you may want to think about that a moment; it does present a little problem. How does a normal person schedule use of the maternity ward 10 months in advance anyway?

This is what is happening with the Obama administration and veterans’ health care. The veterans in this country simply demand a different kind of service as far as health care goes. Wars are such dangerous things, you know. Messy. People lose limbs and things. There is PTSD, there are traumatic brain injuries, there are all kinds of things that don’t even surface immediately. This little group, from the perspective of a universal health care bean counter in Washington, simply demands far more of their “fair share” of the national resources. How are we supposed to have the funds to offer everybody a cruddy white quonset hut when these people demand special living accommodations? We will run out of cash before we cover even half of America’s hillsides in trashy government housing (metaphorically speaking).

You have to understand that the people who are pushing universal health care see the United States as a pie with a limited area. That means that to divide everything up “fairly”, they just have to slice those slices really, really small. They do not see it like a business owner would; namely, as a pie chart that can actually get bigger over all as the economy grows.

If you want universal health care and a single Washington bureaucracy to run it, then you are going to have to pay for it in terms of lower quality care for veterans, it is as simple as that.

Which leads me to the really interesting thing about all of this. I am always curious about why the government wants to build all those plastic beer cans for people to live in anyway (to speak metaphorically again). What on Earth do they really gain by taking more and more of everybody’s money so more people can have less and less? It really boils down to the currency of Washington; control. They don’t go to Washington in order to make money. If you want that, you go to Wall Street or the financial services corridor of Boston. No, you go to Washington to make your career if you really want control. If the government is “giving” you your little cheap beer can residence; they can set the terms. They can decide how you use it. They can make more rules. Ultimately, there is simply a group of people around the current administration and the Democratic Congressional leaders who want to make more rules, controls, regulations, and mechanisms for controlling people’s lives. They want this the way a greedy Wall Street trader wants money. They are addicted to it, they cannot ever have enough.

That is why the veterans will be sacrificed on the altar of universal health care. They are not a big enough interest group for Obama to care about. Unlike the unions, they mostly vote Republican anyway, so they don’t count. They demand a grocery store shelf with more things on it than that single, lonely loaf of unspeakable matter. Therefore they will forgo their “special” health care so that all can have what Canada has and wait in line 10 months to get into the maternity ward.

I guess we had all better practice our precognition skills.
